The Novice by Taran Matharu: Short Review

Hello guys,

So I was very excited about reading The Novice, and I liked what I knew about the plotline. Honestly, another driving factor for me was the beautiful cover. Yes, I am one of those people who gets pulled in by a pretty cover. But just look at it...can you blame me?

HOWEVER,

I started reading the book last week and found it very engaging. I liked Fletcher and getting to know him was fun. I like the setting of the novel and learning about how he grew up. I liked his relationship with his adopted/foster father and Berdon took him when no one else in the village was inclined or could afford to.

Once Fletcher summoned his first demon, and after the incident with Didric, that was when things started to go downhill for me. I felt like the story shifted and was trying to be something that it wasn't. Since I just started reading Harry Potter, I could see traces of that in the plot; and where HP flourish this book failed. The side characters were mildly entertaining and were just very underdeveloped. Fletcher became somewhat of a boring character after he got to the school and was always finding himself in some mishap. The characters as a whole also came off very juvenile and lacked depth, which would be okay if this was a middle-grade novel and not targeted to older teens.

The one thing that I did like throughout the novel were the demons, I like how they behaved and how they came to the aid of their summoners when in need. I specifically, like Ignatius, he was my favorite and too cute.

*** I won't go too much further into the storyline of the book because I don't want to spoil it for any of you guys who may have an interest in picking this one up at some point.
For readers who are looking for something like Harry Potter, I would still suggest this book. Lots of people like this series or I wouldn't have heard about on booktube, so my experience with this book is very subjective.

With that being said, I had such high expectation that I bought all three books in the series, and now I won't be continuing on with them. So I will be hosting a giveaway at some point to you guys, and maybe one of you lucky folk will enjoy it more than I did. Stay tuned!!

New Release: Kato (Stone Warriors #2) by D.B. Reynolds

Hey book lovers,

I just wanted to share with you this new release from one of my favorite authors. She is amazing and her stories are even more so. If you haven't read her any of her books yet, I urge to get on that! Her latest release is Kato book 2 of the Stone Warriors series.

Here is a Synopsis:

It was a time when gods walked the earth, when armies fought not for bits of land, but for the very existence of humanity. On such a battlefield, five formidable warriors stood against an evil greater than any the earth had ever seen. But evil is not an honorable foe. Betrayed by someone they trusted, the warriors were cursed, one by one, tossed into the maelstrom of time, imprisoned in stone, their freedom resting on nearly impossible conditions. Until...

Kato Amadi...born of darkest sorcery, unstoppable on the battlefield, his magic is as deadly as his blade. But not even magic could save him from vicious betrayal. Trapped for millennia in darkness and silence, he is freed at last, only to find himself in the middle of a battle against the very beasts of hell he was created to destroy.

Grace Van Allen is a scholar of ancient languages who toils in the dim recesses of a museum basement with only a beautiful stone warrior to keep her company. But when Grace calls upon her silent warrior to help her translate an obscure new language, she breaks the ancient curse holding him prisoner...and frees three deadly demons to rampage through her city.

Tracking demons is what Kato was born to do, but he’ll need Grace’s help. And when they discover that Kato’s enemy is still alive and still plotting against him, their hunt takes a dangerous turn, one that might just prove fatal for both of them...

Currently Reading:Saving Anya

Saving Anya (Book 4 of The Medlov Crime Family Series) by Latrivia Nelson (now known as Latrivia Welch)

Book Blurb:
What will a man do for his family? If you’re a Medlov, the answer is anything.

Dmitry Medlov, former boss of the Medlov Crime Family, is finally happy with his life. His legacy has been passed on to his heir, Anatoly, and his family is flourishing with birth of his new twin sons. However, everything is shattered when his little girl is abducted from her school only days after his sons’ births.
The question with Dmitry having so many enemies is who has her? A supporter of Dorian, a follower of Ivan or family of the council members he slaughtered? No one knows.

A ransom is put on the young girl in the amount of $500 million – a price Dmitry is more than ready to pay – but the fear in everyone’s heart is even if he pays, will she live?

Everyone comes together and puts aside their differences to save her. Dmitry returns to the council, Anatoly steps aside and Gabriel takes his rightful place as a Vor.

Anya is the key to the very foundation of the family and her father’s fleeting sanity. With her missing, Dmitry’s rage is unleashed unlike anyone has ever seen before.

Gabriel used to serve the very government that he is about to defy as he learns what it means to be a true Medlov.

And Anatoly is forced to grow up when he not only finds out that the little girl he’s loved her entire life has been stolen but also that he’s about to be a father himself.

This my second read of the series. I love the cast of characters and the bond that makes them who they are.

Anyone else read them?

Currently Reading: The Trials Of Apollo

So I just finished reading The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, and I really ended up liking it after a very slow start and after putting it down a few times. Unfortunately, I don't have the rest of the books in the series yet, so my next read is The Trials of Apollo Book by Rick Riordan. Never read any of his books before, but I heard good things about this series on booktube, so I will give it shot.

The after than I plan on reading Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Highlights of Big Little Lies Season 1 Episode 6

***Very Limited Spoiler Included

Wow, just wow! I really like this series, I never read the book, but the show is very well put together. This episode is my favorite, so far, because of the realness, I got from it.

That dinner scene was fantastic! When Madeline puked all over the table and on Bonnie, I almost cracked a rib laughing. I, however, would have slapped her.

Madeline is always a little bit cooky no-nonsense woman, who is not afraid to speak her mind. What really touched me in this series it the effort that she puts into relating to her daughter and trying to get her to reframe from making a detrimental decision. The fact that she was able to share her own personal mistake and drive home the fact that no one is perfect, especially her, was very touching and I applaud her guts.

Jane finally stood up to Renata and scratched that crazy woman in the face. That was a great scene. However, I like the fact that Jane was a big enough person to go and apologized. Renata while appearing gracious was fake as hell. She has something up her sleeve!! All will be revealed soon.
The dysfunction continues to progress between Perry and Celeste. While from the outside this couple appears to be perfect but they are really messed up and abusive to each other. In one of their scuffles Perry and grab Celeste's hair, and she used a tennis bat hit him where it counts, and he wound up with a broken urethra in two places. In my opinion, he had it coming!! Celeste also took the advice of her counselor and rented a secret apartment but does she have the guts to leave her very charming, very abusive maniac husband? That is yet to be seen.

That's all Folks. Check back next week for episode 7 highlights.

Review of Before I Shatter

Mostly Spoiler free review but little tidbits of information will be included to solidify my review.

I had high hopes for this novel, but I found too many faults to enjoy the novel fully.  My biggest issue was that the ending was too abrupt and felt very rushed. Additionally, the chapters were too short with too many internal breaks that cumulated to a very disjointed story. The characters development was very sparse even for the main character. There should have been more meat added to the back story of Vita to help us build a connection with her.

There were a couple of interesting characters in the book, and I would have like to see more of them, but this was not so. The overall plot felt very rushed even though the book was over 300 pages. I do like the premise of the story, but it fell short on its delivery.
The writing was a bit juvenile and simplistic which made it impossible to delve and get lost in the book.

As I have mentioned before, the ending was the biggest let down for me in that, I was not very surprised by the ending, and I was left feeling unmoved and not really looking forward to the next book.

Alert: mild spoiler ahead!!!
The best part of the book, for me, were all the scenes with Vita and James, you can tell that he loves her from both his covert and overt behaviors. Vita feelings for James is believable in that it wasn't an instant love connection but that she acknowledges that she could develop something deeper for him if given time.

I think the author as great potential, and I would read other books by her, but this one fell short of the mark.

I am giving this book 3 stars for its potential to become something better if the author spends more time on fully developing her characters and giving them more personality (hopefully this will be done in the next book).

A copy of this book was provided to me in return for an honest review.

Books I am currently reading

The Arcana Series By Kresley Cole

I choose to skip book 4 (although I do own a copy) because it wasn't a full story but more of a compilation of data on all the major players in the Arcana Series, such as who they are, what powers they hold, and what they were doing on the day of the flash.

Here is what book 4 looks like

Review of all the book above will be posted soon.

The Novice by Taran Matharu: Short Review

Hello guys, So I was very excited about reading The Novice, and I liked what I knew about the plotline. Honestly, another driving factor...
